The Patriot Ledger

The Patriot Ledger is a newspaper based in Quincy, a little outside Boston. I was hired for an internship as someone who did page layouts.

For my internship, I laid out pages, designed series templates, managed asset libraries, and did some minor copy-editing. On average, I was responsible for 4 pages a day.

Page Layout

Pages can be separated into two categories: section fronts and insides. Section fronts include pages like the front page, and typically prioritize images and the main headlines of the section. Sections are parts of the newspaper that can be easily separated from one another, like mini-booklets. Insides are the more standard text-heavy grayscale pages where the priority is to fit most of the text while still having images to break up the space.

Most of my saved layouts fall into the former category, with more dynamic shapes and freedom to do image manipulation.

Series

Occasionally, the newspaper would produce a series that lasted several weeks. This would require at least a logo, and would sometimes want a page layout. For the logo, I would be provided with copy, dimensions, and a timeframe. I would create the vector illustrations in inDesign, oftentimes creating multiple versions as options.
